The canton combines the high Alps and the Rhone Valley, tradition and modernity, isolation and international appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Life between valley and mountain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Valais is geographically challenging. Many municipalities are situated at high altitudes, in remote locations, and are heavily dependent on weather and seasons. At the same time, life is concentrated in the Rhone Valley, where infrastructure, transport, and the economy are concentrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This division is characteristic of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Politics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Economy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>societal debates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Economy with a strong base<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tourism, energy (hydropower), agriculture, and viticulture form the economic foundation. Energy production, in particular, makes Valais strategically important for Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The canton is increasingly thinking long-term:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>sustainable energies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Year-round tourism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>regional value creation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Society and Identity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Valais is considered self-confident, steeped in tradition, and independent. Local identity plays a major role. Decisions are often made regionally, not nationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This strength can provide stability, but sometimes makes rapid adjustments more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Natural hazards and climate change<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Glaciers, permafrost, and steep slopes make Valais particularly vulnerable to climate change.
