SBB delay: What compensation is available in Switzerland?

20251125 1403 SBB delay

Train delays are rare in Switzerland, but they do happen. Many people are unsure whether they are entitled to compensation in the event of a delay—and if so, how much.

Here you will find the most important rules.

When will I receive compensation?

A uniform system has been in place in Switzerland since 2023:

You will receive compensation if:

  • your train more than 60 minutes is delayed
  • or it's completely cancelled and you arrive significantly later.

How much is the compensation?

The compensation depends on the Ticket price:

  • 25 % Refund from 60 minutes delay
  • 50 % refund from 120 minutes delay

Special rules apply to subscriptions (GA, Half-Fare, route-specific subscription).

How do I apply for compensation?

The request is made directly online:

  1. On sbb.ch or in the SBB Mobile App
  2. Section: "Report a delay"„
  3. Image upload / Enter ticket number
  4. Submit form

Refunds are usually processed within a few days.

Does this also apply to international connections?

Yes — even stricter rules apply to connections through EU countries.

Are there any exceptions?

Yes. No compensation is provided in the following cases:

  • Extreme weather
  • Force majeure (e.g. storm damage, avalanches)
  • Self-inflicted missed appointments (e.g., arriving too late at the train station)

Conclusion

For SBB train delays of 60 minutes or more, there is a clearly defined right to compensation. Applying for compensation is quick and easy online.
