Train delays are rare in Switzerland, but they do happen. Many people are unsure whether they are entitled to compensation in the event of a delay—and if so, how much.
Here you will find the most important rules.
When will I receive compensation?
A uniform system has been in place in Switzerland since 2023:
You will receive compensation if:
- your train more than 60 minutes is delayed
- or it's completely cancelled and you arrive significantly later.
How much is the compensation?
The compensation depends on the Ticket price:
- 25 % Refund from 60 minutes delay
- 50 % refund from 120 minutes delay
Special rules apply to subscriptions (GA, Half-Fare, route-specific subscription).
How do I apply for compensation?
The request is made directly online:
- On sbb.ch or in the SBB Mobile App
- Section: "Report a delay"„
- Image upload / Enter ticket number
- Submit form
Refunds are usually processed within a few days.
Does this also apply to international connections?
Yes — even stricter rules apply to connections through EU countries.
Are there any exceptions?
Yes. No compensation is provided in the following cases:
- Extreme weather
- Force majeure (e.g. storm damage, avalanches)
- Self-inflicted missed appointments (e.g., arriving too late at the train station)
Conclusion
For SBB train delays of 60 minutes or more, there is a clearly defined right to compensation. Applying for compensation is quick and easy online.
