Canton of Glarus – Reforms, Industry and Alpine Change

Canton of Glarus Illustrated

The Canton of Glarus It is small, but politically courageous. The canton of Glarus is known for direct democracy, early reforms, and the attempt to combine alpine realities with modern structures.

Landsgemeinde and political culture

The Landsgemeinde (cantonal assembly) is more than just a tradition. It shapes political decision-making processes, transparency, and citizen engagement. Reforms such as municipal mergers were implemented here early on – often against resistance, but with a long-term perspective.

Economic basis

Industry, energy, construction, and specialized SMEs form the economic backbone. Despite its small size, the canton is export-oriented and technologically competent.

Glarus shows that industry can also thrive in the Alpine region.

Life in Glarus

Daily life is peaceful, close to nature, and manageable. Housing is affordable, and the quality of life is high – provided one accepts limited choices and long commutes.

Many people commute or work in a hybrid model.

Social change

The canton is struggling with emigration, an aging population, and a limited job market. At the same time, new models are emerging:

  • Co-working
  • Immigration of families
  • new forms of tourism

Looking ahead

The Canton of Glarus will have to continue experimenting. His strength lies in his willingness to try new things without abandoning his own identity.
